About Joy Murrieta

Tell us about yourself and how you got started:

“Nine years ago, a group of artists friends and I who were living and working in the Main South, Worcester noticed that there was a lack of accessibility to arts programs for the youth in our neighborhood, and we decided to pool our resources to meet that need. What started off as a community volunteer project soon evolved into an annual tradition and eventually into an official nonprofit in 2015. I stepped down from the Board of Directors and into the role of Executive Director in 2018.”

Any advice for others that are trying to start a project or business:

“1) Be flexible and open to change; Perhaps circumstances change to cause you to need to adapt to a different reality than when you first started.2) Pace yourself and make boundaries; It’s easy to get carried away when you’re excited and there’s a lot of work to do, but remember you’re human, not a robot, and consequently need things like rest and sleep and food and play.3) Take heart! It takes a lot of self-assurance and confidence to start a new project/business–it is not for the faint of heart!”
